Reminders that fill the room
Attendance follows reminders. Keep members in a contact group, write the reminder once and schedule it for the same time each week; send an extra message when the programme changes. Delivery reports show which members received it, and a branded sender ID (the church or organisation's name, up to 11 characters, on an authorization letter) means the message is recognised at a glance.
Personal messages to members and beneficiaries
A cooperative telling each farmer what their delivery weighed and what they will be paid; an NGO telling each beneficiary their collection date; a church thanking each giver for a specific contribution — these are personalised messages from a spreadsheet: one row per member, one template with merge fields, one message each.
Growing the list by keyword
Print "Text JOIN to 388" on the bulletin, say it at the meeting, put it on the poster. Every message starting with your keyword is routed to your inbox; add the sender to the right contact group and send a welcome reply. It builds a consented list without forms, and the same mechanism takes votes (a keyword per option) and feedback. See two-way SMS.
Reaching members on any phone
Membership organisations reach the widest range of handsets of any sender — from smartphones to the most basic phones — and SMS is the one channel that reaches all of them, on MTN, Airtel and Zamtel alike, without data. That is why WhatsApp groups end up supplemented by an SMS list rather than replaced by one.
Volunteers, branches and shared budgets
An organisation with several branches or programmes can share one credit balance across staff logins through an organisation account, with a record of which member sent what. Denominations, federations and umbrella bodies that support many local organisations can join the reseller programme and give each one its own account and sender ID.
Consent and data protection
Members have joined the organisation and expect to hear from it, but keep a record of how each number came onto the list and honour anyone who asks to stop by adding them to the blacklist, which suppresses them from every future send. Phone numbers are personal data under Zambia's Data Protection Act 2021; the platform's Privacy notice describes how they are handled.
Paying for SMS as an NGO or church
There is no contract: create a free account with trial credits, then buy credits by MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Zamtel Kwacha at volume rates, seeing the cost of each send before it goes out. Donor-funded programmes can arrange invoicing through info@ontech.co.zm.
