Bulk SMS in Zambia

Bulk SMS is the sending of one text message to many recipients at once — a fee reminder to every parent, an OTP to a customer, a promotion to a segment. Ontech BulkSMS is a Zambian bulk SMS platform with direct routes to MTN, Airtel and Zamtel.

Definition.

Bulk SMS is the sending of one text message to many mobile numbers at once from a platform or an API rather than a handset. In Zambia that means reaching MTN, Airtel and Zamtel subscribers — on any phone, with or without internet — from a single account, with a delivery report for every message.

How bulk SMS works in Zambia

Every mobile number in Zambia belongs to one of three networks, and each network accepts application traffic (messages sent by software rather than by a person on a SIM) over a carrier-grade connection called an SMPP bind. A bulk SMS platform holds those connections so you do not have to. When you send, the platform does five things:

  1. Accepts your message and recipients — from the web console, the Android app, an uploaded spreadsheet, or an API call from your own software.
  2. Checks each number — normalises it to the international form, drops invalid entries, and suppresses anyone on your opt-out blacklist.
  3. Prices and reserves credits — you see the credit cost before you confirm; credits are deducted only for messages actually queued.
  4. Routes by network — the number prefix decides whether the message goes to the MTN, Airtel or Zamtel connection, and the message is submitted with your approved sender ID.
  5. Collects the delivery report — the network reports back whether the handset received it, and that status is stored against the message so you can see it in the dashboard, poll it from the API, or have it pushed to a callback URL.

That last step is what separates a bulk SMS platform from forwarding messages off a phone: you know, per recipient, what happened.

Who uses bulk SMS in Zambia

The same platform carries very different messages depending on the sender. A microfinance institution sends one-time passwords and repayment reminders; a school sends fee balances and results; a church sends service reminders; a retailer sends a Friday promotion. The industry guides describe each in detail, with the sample messages they actually send. The two broad categories are:

Sending your first bulk SMS

  1. Create a free customer account. It comes with trial credits so you can send a test message straight away. Resellers apply for a partner account instead.
  2. Add contacts — type them, import a CSV, or upload a spreadsheet — and optionally organise them into groups.
  3. Request a sender ID under Sender IDs and upload your authorization letter. Until it is approved you can still send using the platform's default sender.
  4. Buy credits with MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Zamtel Kwacha. The rate card and the credit cost of a send are shown before you pay.
  5. Compose, preview the personalised message, send or schedule, and watch the delivery reports arrive.

The video tutorials walk through a personalised bulk send, buying credits, a campaign with A/B testing and the sender ID request end to end.

Bulk SMS pricing in Zambia

Ontech BulkSMS is pay-as-you-go: you buy SMS credits and each message consumes credits according to its length (a standard message is one credit; longer messages are split into segments). Rates are volume-based — the more credits you buy in one top-up, the lower the per-credit rate — and the full rate card is shown in your dashboard before you pay. There is no monthly fee for a customer account. Enterprise volume and reseller wholesale terms are agreed with info@ontech.co.zm.

Message length matters for cost. A plain-text SMS holds 160 characters; messages containing characters outside the basic GSM alphabet (some symbols and emoji) are limited to 70 characters per segment. The credit cost of a send is shown before you confirm it.

Bulk SMS and Zambian data protection

Recipient numbers and message content are personal data. Ontech Solutions Limited is registered with Zambia's Data Protection Commission (registration DP000394); the platform's Privacy & Data Protection notice sets out what is collected, why, and how long it is kept, and the Terms & Acceptable Use require that promotional messages go only to recipients who have consented and can opt out. The blacklist exists so that an opt-out is honoured automatically on every future send.

Frequently asked questions

What is bulk SMS?

Bulk SMS is the sending of a single text message to a large list of mobile numbers at the same time, usually from a web platform or an API rather than a handset. Businesses use it for alerts, reminders, one-time passwords and marketing because SMS works on every phone without internet access.

How does bulk SMS work in Zambia?

A bulk SMS platform connects to the Zambian mobile networks (MTN, Airtel and Zamtel) through carrier-grade SMPP links. You upload or select your recipients, write the message, and the platform submits each message to the right network based on the number prefix, then collects a delivery report for each one.

Which networks can I reach with Ontech BulkSMS?

All three Zambian mobile networks: MTN, Airtel and Zamtel. Messages are routed per network based on the recipient's number prefix, and each message returns a delivery report.

Do I need a contract to start?

No. You can create a free customer account online, receive trial SMS credits, and buy more credits by mobile money (MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or Zamtel Kwacha) when you are ready. Enterprise and reseller arrangements are agreed separately.

Can I send from my company name instead of a number?

Yes. Branded sender IDs (up to 11 characters) are available on approval. You request the sender ID in your dashboard and provide a signed authorization letter; once approved it is used on every message you send with it.

Is there an API?

Yes. Developers can send SMS over a simple HTTP or JSON API, poll delivery status, check balance and manage contacts and templates, or bind directly over SMPP 3.4 for high-volume traffic.
